Wales boss Craig Bellamy has held talks with Joe Allen in a bid to convince him to make a U-turn on his international retirement, according to reports.

Bellamy is said to have recently visited Swansea’s training ground to speak to the midfielder, who hung up his boots for his country in February 2023.

Allen, 34, was awarded 74 caps during a 14-year spell with the Dragons and The Sun have claimed that he has not ruled out making a return to action.

He is, however, determined to reach peak condition at club level first.

With Nations League matches scheduled for next month and qualification for the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Bellamy is keen to expand his talent pool.

Allen helped Wales qualify for three major tournaments but bowed out after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, citing injuries as a significant reason behind his decision.

Bellamy was appointed after Rob Page’s sacking in June and signed a four-year deal.

The Sun say that the manager is a big admirer of Allen, having played with the veteran for Wales and for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey is expected to miss out on his country’s final four Nations League fixtures due to a hamstring injury and Page is thought to have spoken to Allen and Rangers’ Tom Lawrence ahead of possible future call-ups.

Allen has made four substitute appearances for Swansea this season.

In a statement after announcing his Wales retirement, Allen said: ‘Playing for Wales has been a great passion and love in my life.

‘I have been extremely fortunate. I’ve shared this journey with incredible people – my family, team-mates, staff and fans have made it special and I’m grateful to you all.

‘Our nation’s support is inspiring and it has given me immense pride to wear the shirt… so many unforgettable experiences.

‘Unfortunately, time and injuries take their toll and so it’s time for me to make way for our next generation. The future of Welsh football is bright.’
