Chris Sutton blasted Manuel Neuer as a ‘moron’ while Ian Ladyman claimed the German goalkeeper has an ‘ego the size of a Munich beer hall’ as the pair discussed the fallout of Bayern’s 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

Unai Emery’s Champions League debutants pulled off a heroic victory courtesy of Jhon Duran’s stunning goal as Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side fell to an agonising defeat in the Midlands.

Goalkeeper, Neuer and England captain Harry Kane were slammed by the German press for their performances against Villa, with Sutton and Ladyman insisting criticism of the shot-stopper is warranted.

Neuer is widely-regarded as one of the game’s greatest goalkeepers and is still Bayern’s main choice between the posts for the biggest fixtures at 38-years-old.

However, on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off! podcast, former Premier League winner, Sutton, and football editor, Ladyman, debated whether Neuer and Kane deserve to be slammed for their recent showing.

‘Harry Kane, remarkably, getting it in the neck from the German press, built the main German football newspaper, accused Kane of being a flat track bully after the draw with Leverkusen at the weekend,’ said Ladyman.

‘He’s been getting it again in Germany on Thursday morning, which seems quite remarkable given his record in the Bundesliga actually averages out as more than a goal a game.’

Sutton sought to defend Kane after his stunning goals return since moving to Germany one year ago, but scathed Neuer after being beaten by Duran’s stunning finish at Villa Park.

‘What 10 goals in eight games this season, 44 goals last season. I think most clubs wouldn’t mind a bit of Harry Kane,’ fumed Sutton.

‘Not that I’m a regular subscriber, but if Harry Kane was getting in the neck, I hope Manuel Neuer was getting it in the neck more because I said in commentary last night, the guy’s a moron. His decision making to come out in no man’s land. How many times have we seen it?

‘The guy’s ego mad.  I mean, blimey, if Kane is getting it in the in the German papers more than Neuer, then heaven help us,’ he added.

Ladyman later agreed with his co-host’s take, adding: ‘He [Neuer] has got an ego the size of a Munich beer hall. So I get where you’re coming from on that.’
