Wrexham co-owner Robert McElhenney has revealed his unconventional collection of grass patches taken from each of the club’s ‘special games’.

The Welsh side are currently sat at the top of League One after five matches in their first campaign back in the third tier in 19 years.

The Red Dragons have undergone a meteoric rise since McElhenney took over the club with fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds in 2021, achieving back-to-back promotions under their ownership.

And McElhenney was happy to share that he keeps grass from the Racecourse Ground pitch to remind him of significant moments from his time as co-owner.

‘Every game, I take a little piece of the pitch with me,’ McElhenney told the Men in Blazers podcast. ‘This marks all of the special games.’

The framed keepsake, which holds 12 clumps of grass, was given to him by his wife Kaitlin Olson.

The most recent addition to his collection is from Wrexham’s 6-0 drubbing of Forest Green last season, which secured their promotion to League One.

‘I actually wasn’t there for that game because we weren’t sure that that was going to be the clincher,’ McElhenney added. ‘So I had Humphrey [Ker] grab me a bunch of grass and he put it in a plastic bag for me.’

Wrexham’s Executive Director Humphrey Ker ignited McElhenney’s love for the game and introduced him to the historic Welsh club back in 2020.

McElhenney continued: ‘Every other game I’ve been to, and it goes all the way back to our first home win. Wrexham five Maidstone nil.’

The American actor can frequently be seen cheering the Red Dragons on from the stands, often alongside co-owner and Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds.

The Red Dragons are unbeaten in their first five matches this season and are top of Leagu One

In April, McElhenney was spotted at the Racecourse Ground for his side’s victory over Stockport, where he was pictured with his wife Kaitlin and a jubilant Reynolds, who was present for the full-time celebrations over FaceTime.

Just last month, passionate co-owners McElhenney and Reynolds were joined in the stands by Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria to watch Wrexham’s 3-2 win against Wycombe.

The Hollywood-backed club have had an unbeaten start to the new campaign, winning four of their first five league matches, while drawing the other.
