New Everton owners ‘could replace Sean Dyche with ex-England boss Gareth Southgate’ – who has not managed at club level since 2009

Ex-England manager Gareth Southgate has reportedly emerged as a possible target for the US-based group set to take control of Everton.

The Friedkin Group, led by chairman Dan Friedkin, reached an agreement to buy Farhad Moshiri’s majority 94 per cent stake in the Toffees earlier this week.

But the deal, which is set to earn Moshiri’ around £400million, is still subject to regulatory approval from the Premier League, the Football Association and the Financial Conduct Authority.

Friedkin has a net worth of £5.7billion, according to Forbes, and talkSPORT has claimed that his takeover will allow Everton to move into their new stadium debt free next year.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT also reports that Friedkin could look to part ways with Sean Dyche to make way for 54-year-old Southgate.

There could also soon be a change of management, with Sean Dyche’s job reportedly at risk

Dyche has been in charge at Goodison Park since January 2023 and has overseen 70 games – 23 wins, 19 draws and 28 defeats.

His current contract is due to expire in June next year, meaning Everton would only be required to pay a relatively modest sum of compensation were they to sack him.

Southgate left his role as manager of the England men’s national team in July, shortly after his side had suffered a second consecutive European Championship final loss.

He had worked directly for the Football Association for more than a decade, having previously spent three years in charge of England’s U21 side.

Southgate’s one and only job as a club manager to date saw him lead Middlesbrough between June 2006 and October 2009.

He oversaw 151 games as Boro boss – winning 45, drawing 43 and losing 63.

Southgate reached three FA Cup quarter-finals with Middlesbrough. He finished 12th and 13th in his first two Premier League campaigns, before suffering relegation courtesy of a 19th-place finish in the 2008-09 season.
