League Two side Bromley have announced the surprise signing of a former England international.

Bromley, who achieved promotion from the National League last season, began their League Two campaign brightly with wins over Harrogate Town and AFC Wimbledon in their first two games.

However, Andy Woodman’s side are winless from their last five in the league.

But the south London side will do everything they can to stay up and hope the signature of the one-time England defender will do the business.

It’s why Woodman has turned to former Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson, who has joined Bromley on a permanent deal.

Jenkinson joined the League Two club after he was released by Australian side Newcastle Jets

The 32-year-old made over 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and West Ham United

Despite the English transfer window closing on August 30, Bromley were able to complete the signing as Jenkinson was a free agent after departing Australian club Newcastle Jets.

The 32-year-old made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Jets in the two seasons he was there, having been brought over to Australia in 2022 by Melbourne City, who are part of the City Football Group, on a loan deal from Nottingham Forest.

Jenkinson’s move to Bromley marks the fifth club in London he has played for.

The right-back joined Charlton Athletic as a seven-year-old and made his first-team league in February 2011, with a loan stint at Welling United in 2010 giving him a good taste of men’s football.

He signed for Arsenal just four months later and would go on to make 70 appearances for the Gunners over an eight-year spell in which he won the FA Cup in 2014.

Jenkinson would spend two consecutive seasons on loan at West Ham United from 2014 to 2016.

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sent Jenkinson on loan to Birmingham City for the 2017/18 campaign before inking a permanent deal with Nottingham Forest in 2019.

Jenkinson earned his first and only England cap in 2012 when he replaced Glen Johnson in a friendly against Sweden.

The right-back could make his Bromley debut as early as Saturday against MK Dons

He will wear the No. 6 jersey at Bromley where he reunites with Woodman, who worked with him during the pair’s time at Charlton.

Bromley supporters won’t have to wait long to see Jenkinson in action as the club welcomes MK Dons to Hayes Lane on Saturday.

Jenkinson could make it back-to-back appearances in quick succession as Bromley hosts Chesterfield on Tuesday.
